Question

Can mahr be renegotiated? Our relatives set a huge amount that my husband and I had no part in agreeing to. I don't want to burden my husband with a large debt, and want to follow the sunnah of reasonable mahrs.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

The mahr is something the husband gives to the wife. You and your wife can renegotiate the mahr--based on mutual agreement--to something the two of you are more comfortable with. [ Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar ]

It is best that you use discretion in this, and to write it down clearly, so that it doesn't lead to dispute in the future.

And Allah alone gives success.
