Question

While paying zakat money to a charity organization, do we have to take into consideration the portion of that money that goes towards their owen overhead expenses.

For example, if $100 is paid to a charity organization for a specific project in some part of the world, and on their website they've mentioned that, lets say, 15% of money received is used for their administrative expenses, should we consider the zakat paid to be full $100 or $85?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

Given the obligation that zakat funds be given specifically to the poor and needy themselves, one should only give zakat to those charities that appear to have a clear policy of how zakat funds are handled.
