Why tarawih?

Question
I do not mean to be rude but I already know that this is the sunnah, but as a convert to Islam this really does not help me. Why did the Rasool (pbuh) perform it? There must be a reason behind this action.

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
The reason is that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) came with the means for us to draw closer to Allah, to reach the ranks of those who love Allah and whom He loves, and to be of those of ultimate felicity.
Tarawih prayer, like all other sunnas, is one such means.
