Question
I have intention of going to Pakistan for Islamic studies for 1 year. I am married with no kids. Is it permissible for me to leave my wife behind for 1 year (she will be living with my family) but she is sad because of me going.Answer
Assalamu alaykum
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful.
Although a man should not remain separated from his wife for more than four months at one time, it would be permissible if she grants him permission to do so and there is no possibility of her falling into fitna [compromising situations].
Having said this, there are still many emotional, social and ethical aspects to take into consideration which make this situation difficult. If at all possible, either find a place to study locally or allow her to accompany you abroad. This may make things monetarily more difficult, but will be easier on both of you in other regards.
However, judging the scarcity and the need for more qualified Islamic scholarship in the Western Hemisphere, it would be permissible to be away for a year with her permission and if there is no fear of her having to face compromising situations.
And Allah knows best.
