Question

What does Islam say about the potential for conflict between spiritual faith (or revelation) and human reason?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Muslims understand revelation as being God’s informing His chosen prophets of spiritual and ultimate realities. Revelation gives humanity the guidance for felicity in both this life and the next. The content of revelation is ultimate reality: absolute truth.

Human reason can be sound or unsound. When reason appears to conflict with revelation:

a) It may well be that the human reasoning itself is unsound;

b) It may be that the revelation has been corrupted.

However, what we notice clearly about the Revelation of Islam, the Holy Qur’an, is that there is no such conflict between the realities affirmed in it and sound human reason.

I invite you to read any reliable translation of the Qur’an to appreciate this.

A very good translation is:
