Question

How do we reconcile the verses that Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him and the point of aqeeda that one can repent from riya?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Allah does not forgive manifest shirk (associating others with Allah), unless one leaves shirk for belief. Despite being termed "lesser shirk" because of its foulness and sinfulness, showing off (riya) may be forgiven by Allah even if one did not repent.

In general, it is personally obligatory to repent from every single sin, and repentance is a means to eternal felicity, for Allah Most High says,

"Repent to Allah, o believers, in order that you be successful." [Qur'an]

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
