Question

Can a Muslim wife obey her husband about not covering her head because he does not like it and find it attractive. There are a lot of fights and he gets angry and unhappy about it. If she does obey him, and takes off her hijab, would she be sinful?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

This is a difficult trial, and an true honor from Allah Most High for the one who remains resolute, strong, and patient in doing the right thing. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that there is no obedience to creation in disobedience to the Creator. Thus, the sister must continue to wear her hijab and maintain other manifestations of her modesty, for the sake of Allah Most High, out of thankfulness for the countless blessings Allah has bestowed upon her and out of love for Allah.

With this, she must continue to deal with excellence, love, and gentleness with her husband. Even when he is angry, she should remain calm and dignified--the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that the strong person is in reality the one who remains calm and can control their anger when there are reasons to get angry. He also told us (Allah bless him and give him peace) that forbearance is the best of character traits.

If she remains steadfast in this, then it is the promise of Allah that her husband will change in his stance and submit to her choice to turn to her Lord in modest submission.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
