Question
I read "Performing Hajj with a debt". In it you are talking about a debt which doesn''''t involve riba. My question is if somebody has a mortgage involving riba then should he be thinking of performing hajj or should he be thinking of getting himself out of riba first? Which is important?
Answer
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
It is more incumbent to repay such debts than to perform Hajj, because of the well-established fiqh principle derived from the Qur'an and Sunna that, "Avoiding harm is given precedence to attaining unto benefits." [Ibn Nujaym]
And Allah alone gives success.
