Question

I was taught a particular dua as a child. I wish to know the meaning of it and when it should be used. I have looked in various books of dua collections and I have not found it.

The dua is: (excuse the poor transliteration)

bismillah hil lazee; la yaduro; ma asmihi; shayun fil arday; wala fisamay; wa hu was sami-ul-aleem.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The dua is:

('In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing on earth or in the sky can harm. And He is the Hearing and Knowing.')

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a rigorously authentic (sahih) hadith that,

"Someone who says 'In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing on earth or in the sky can harm. And He is the Hearing and Knowing,' three times a day isn't harmed by anything." [Related by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Maja]

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
