Which should take precedence? Going for hajj or umrah, or travelling to seek sacred knowledge?

Question

I would like to ask which of going for hajj or umrah, and travelling to seek sacred knowledge should be a higher priority? That is, which should a person try to do first.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

This would depend on one's circumstances.

* If one is seeking to gain personally obligatory knowledge, then this is given precedence over going on Hajj.

* If it is for personal enrichment, then Hajj is given precedence.

* If one is planning to study long term (and has the means, aptitude, and focus to so do) in order to fulfill a communal obligation--through teaching and transmitting Sacred Knowledge--then seeking knowledge would be given precedence, particularly in our times.

And Allah alone gives success.
