Question

Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu. I have classes sometimes that cause me to miss Asr and Maghrib. My question is whether it''s better to combine prayers on those days (i.e do Asr right after I do Dhuhr and do Maghrib when I do Isha) or is it better to make up the prayers when class is over? JazakAllah khair for imparting your knowledge to us.

Answer

Assalamu alaykum

The obligatory prayer is the first thing that a person will be questioned about. It is the support of the religion. As such, not performing it is of the greatest sins, if done without a valid excuse, such as being unconscious during the prayer time.

Attending one's classes is not a valid excuse to perform such a gross sin. One must learn that at times one has to sacrifice a little bit of one's this-worldly business in order to protect and preserve one's other-worldly business which is, quite literally, infinitely more important.

There is therefore no option to skip the prayer or join prayers in such a situation according to any school of fiqh. One must excuse oneself for a couple of minutes and perform the obligatory prayer quickly and return to the class; this should take no more that two to three minutes. One can always get notes from others if one missed something important.

If we learn to prefer Allah over ourselves, and the next life over this life, Allah will be with us and we will find our prayers answered and this-worldly matters made easy for us. It is said that Allah addressed this world and said to it, ''Serve the one who seeks Me, and tire the one who seeks you.''

May Allah make serving Him easy for us in every circumstance.
