Question
The last few Ramadans, I've had my period at the end of the month, and I feel I'm really missing out. Can I take medical ways of stopping my period in order to be able to engage in worship more fully?
Answer
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.
It is permitted to use medical means to delay one's periods--as long as there is no established fear of harm in doing so.
However, one should also remember that the doors of drawing close to Allah are many. You could still:
* Listen to the Qur'an;
* Enter into i`tikaf at home in your 'place of prayer (see answers in the SunniPath QA (http://qa.sunnipath.com) for details);
* Make dhikr, supplication, and send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)--and I would encourage you to read something like Imam Jazuli's Dala'il al-Khayrat (see: www.dalail.co.uk);
* Read books of beneficial knowledge, and listen to inspiring or educational Islamic talks and lessons...
And Allah alone gives success.
