Feeling spiritually low

Question
As salaamu 'alaykum,Last year's Ramadaan was the best Ramadaan I have ever experienced alhamdulillah, I could feel the baraka of the blessed month all around me; it was beautiful. However, this year I don't have the same feeling -- I am fasting, but only by not eating -- I am feeling spiritually barren. I don't know whats wrong with me, it doesn't even feel like Ramadaan, my heart feels dead but I so want to please Allah with my fasts. I want it to be a proper fast, not just a change in my eating times. Every time I do commit a sin (of the eyes, tongue) I know that since the Shaytaan is locked up it is only from my own evil nafs.
Please could you offer some advice, what could be the cause?
Answer
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.
The way to deal with one's enemies is to busy oneself with one's Beloved--Allah Most High. Whenever you feel yourself slipping, seek refuge in Allah from the Devil by saying A`udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir rajeem ('I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil'). When you find yourself feeling down or lacking religious resolve, thank and praise Allah by repeating, Alhamdulillah ('All praise is due to Allah') from the depths of your heart. And try to consistently say "la ilaha illa Allah" ('There is no god by God'), expressing your need, love, thankfulness, and joy in Allah.
And Allah alone gives success.
