Question

I am thinking about starting my own accounting business. From my experiance, I know, people come to accountant trying to avoid paying taxes. While I know that is not an issue with Shariah, I am concerned that, a lot of people hides their real income. They would tell us to report an income to maximize their tax refund and/or lower their lax obligation. A lot of Accountant would make up income and expenses in these kinds of instances. Would income from this kinds of transaction be halal? Please advise.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

As an accountant, it is permitted to maximize a customer's financial interest through pursuing any legally permitted and ethical reporting practices. However, it is not permitted to break the law, cheat, deceive, or engage in any unethical reporting practices--all these are sinful and render one's income unlawful to the extent of the transgression.
