Question

Assalaamu a'laykum

I understand that it is an act of righteousness to be jolly, but what is the motivation behind it? For if one reflects upon death and ones own pathetic state one is inclined to laugh little and weep much. Is it just part of good manners to others or is it for some other reason?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that you are well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good in this life and the next.

(1) It is the sunna of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to smile and be of cheerful disposition when dealing with others.

(2) The remembrance of Allah bring a serenity and inward contentment, for Allah Most High tells us, "Verily, it is by the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest." [Qur'an, al-Ra`d: 28]

(3) The believer is between hope and fear of Allah; between rejoicing and thanking Allah for His blessings, and feeling sad about one's shortcomings. This balance is important.

And Allah alone gives success.
