Question
I'm having problems with my wife, where she doesn't let me study a Shariah Course, once a week for 3 hours 2 year course. I'm married with 4 kids and she thinks that she can't handle the kids without me. I love Islam and love to study about my religion but she thinks I'm going a bit over board. Is there any hadith where it's compolsory to study deen without the wife's permission?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Dear Brother,
I pray this message reaches you and your family in good health and spirits.
Perhaps you should remind your wife of the importance of seeking knowledge for both men and women.
Allah the Mighty and Exalted says, "Say: "Can they who know and they who do not know be deemed equal?" [But] only they who are endowed with insight keep this in mind!" (Az-Zumar, 39:9)
The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace said,
"Whosoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather together in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that tranquility descends upon them, mercy covers them, the angels surround them, and Allah makes mention of them amongst those who are in His presence..." (Muslim)
With four children, your wife has a point about needing help. Let her know that you are there for her and the children. But also emphasize to her that parents do a lot better emotionally and mentally when they have an outlet. By studying, insha'Allah, you will become a better husband and father. You're only asking for three hours a week to yourself. This is reasonable provided that your wife gets her own time off. How about watching the children for three hours on another day so your wife can pursue her interests?
I'm sure that you can work things out with a reasonable compromise.
And Allah knows best.
