In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “There was once a merchant who would sell on credit. Whenever he saw someone who didn’t have enough money to pay him back, he would tell his servants, “Forgive his debt; perhaps Allah will then forgive us,” and Allah forgave him.” (Bukhari)

Other transmissions of this hadith mention that this merchant had no good deeds to his credit except that he used to forgive people their debts in the hope that Allah would forgive his sins. Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani said, “This hadith indicates that when a small amount of good deeds are performed sincerely for Allah, they erase large amounts of bad deeds.” (Fath al-Bari)
