Did the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) die a natural death?
[Faraz: it should be noted that ‘death’ in regards to the Prophet (upon them be the best of blessings and peace) is only is an outward, ‘observable’ sense. The reality, known by decisive texts, is that they are alive in their graves. (see article below)]
Assalamu alaikum,
It has been reported by Anas ibn Maik that a Jewish lady brought a poisonous sheep to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and he ate from it. So she was brought to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and he (Allah bless him and give him peace) asked her about it. She replied, ‘I intended to kill you.’ The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, ‘Allah will not give you the control and upper hand over it.’ or he said, ‘over me.’ The companions then said, ‘Should we not kill her? The Prophet (Allah bless him and give peace) said, ‘No.’ I still know (the effect of the poison) from the uvula of the Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace).
(Muslim, Chapter on Poison. This hadith has also been narrated Bukhari (hadith 2617 Chapter on Gifts) and Abu Dawud (hadith 3508 Chapter on Blood Money)
It has been reported by Hakim in his Mustadrak (3:219) from Um Mubashshir (the mother of Bishr ibnul-Bara; who died because of the poison). She said, ‘I came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) during his illness from which he died. I said to him, I sacrifice my father to you! O’ Messenger of Allah! Who are you suspecting of regarding your condition? Because I am not accusing anyone else regarding my son except the food which he ate with you at Khaibar.’ Her son, Bishr ibn Bara ibn Ma’rur died before the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) replied that, I am not suspecting anyone except her. This is the time for the cutting off of the aorta (eh-or-ta)( main artery of the bo dy carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart.
It has been reported by Hakim in his Mustadrak (3:58) from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) he said, ‘I would prefer to swear nine times that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was killed than to swear once and say he was not killed. This is because Allah made him a Prophet and also made him a Martyr.’
These ahadith indicate the poison effect of the poison from the Jewish lady remained until the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) died. This is the apparent death of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). This does not negate and contradict with the statement of the Prophet of ‘Allah will not give you the control and upper hand over it.’ or he said, ‘over me.’ Because it means the my death is in the hands of Allah. Allah will not give you power and control such that I die according to what you intend. And that what had occurred as the Prophet lived on for three more years, despite the fact that the poison was very severe, as mentioned by Waqidi.
And Allah Knows Best
