Question
I would like to know what obligation's the husband must have on providing his wife with shelter away from the in-laws. The husband is in full-time education and only agreed to the marriage, because his wife had agreed that she would live with his family. He is unable to support her otherwise and the family try very hard to keep Islamic segregation. If she changes her mind after marriage what must be done? And what are the husband's obligations?Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
If the husband is unable to provide a totally separate home for his wife, then the obligation will be fulfilled by providing her a separate area within the house of the in-laws.
This area should be free from the interference of any of the husband’s family, where she is able to keep her belongings and where none of the husband’s family members are able to enter. Also, the bathroom and cooking area should be kept separate, if the husband is not from a poor background.
