Question

My wife is from a religious background, but is lax about her religious duties. She misses prayers on and off, is loose about her hijab when I am not around. She'll watch Indian movies when she visits relatives... I am getting frustrated with all this. She just doesn't seem to care. Is this suitable grounds to divorce her?

Answer

Walaikum assalam,

Sidi, some of my teachers have mentioned that, "Our age is one of encouraging (targhib), not one of scaring (tarhib)."

Through wisdom, gentleness, love, and positive reinforcement, take your wife's hand and encourage her towards the good.

We should not forget what the Beloved of Allah (upon him be the best of blessings and peace) said to the Noble One, Sayyiduna Ali (Allah ennoble his countenance), "O Ali! For Allah to guide a single soul through you is better than the world and all it contains."

Breaking things is easy. Building takes men.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani.
