Question

I have a Question on what I should do about my mom.  She’s been through a lot, but she just complains way too much.  I can’t handle the constant complaining, my heart starts boiling with frustration and anger from all the complaining. Can I tell her to stop complaining to me? It’s not like she wants advice, b/c when I give it, she just ignores it. I feel distant from Allah after those complaining sessions b/c I am just so irritated.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Allah Most High said in the Qur’an:

016.078     And Allah brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers knowing nothing, and gave you hearing and sight and hearts that haply you might give thanks.

And:

031.014      And We have enjoined upon man concerning his partners - His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Give thanks unto Me and unto your parents. Unto Me is the journeying.

Walaikum assalam,

Be patient and wise. Your mother has gone through a lot for you. The least you can do is give her some of your time and emotional support. Instead of giving her advice, do things with her that lessen her frustration and tensions. This may include going out with her in relaxing ways, and spending fulfilling quality time with her. Show her love, and it will bring joy to her heart. Direct her, with excellence, towards the worship and remembrance of Allah, and it will bring serenity to her heart.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
