Question

I have a beard, and my intention is to follow the sunnah, however my mom doesn't like it. She always tells me to shave it off, and I know you are supposed to respect your parents wishes. So in this case what is the best thing to do. I know you don't listen to your parents when they tell you to do something that goes against Islam, but a beard isn't Fard so in this case what is the best thing to do.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is not obligatory to obey one’s parents in such matters, for one has a right to pursue that which is of religious and worldly benefit, as long as there is no real harm or hardship on one’s parents.

However, their absolute right to good treatment remains: you have to treat them with in the best of ways.

See answers below for details.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
