Question

This is a question from a convert sister. Her entire family is non-Muslim. She wants to get married. Does not know who should be the wali? how does she chose a wali? If she has a Muslim friend whose husband she trusts because he is an upright Muslim, can she make him her wali for the marriage?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

A convert sister does not legally need a wali. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

However, appointing a wali is recommended in order for there to be someone and their family to help her ensure that her rights are respected and upheld.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
