Question

Would phoning a relative or immediate member of one's own family be enough to satisfy ALLAH's command to maintain kinship bonds; in the case that some family members are only willing to talk about music, movies, dating, etc.? It is very common here that one family member in given tawfeeq to learn and preach Islam but the other members of his or her family are only interested in speaking about the dunya and its distractions.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The sunna is to have good ties with relatives, to be of help to them, and to share their worldly and religious joys and sorrows. It is not about ‘preaching,’ but about excellence in dealing.

People don’t get closer to Islam by words, but by deeds. This is why Allah’s greatest praises for His Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) were for how he was not what he did.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani

Imam Abu Hanifa (Allah have mercy on him) said, "Fiqh is to know one's self: what is for it and against it.
