Question
According to my husband hijaab is a bit more lenient infront of non- mahram relatives (like his brothers, i.e. my brother in laws). I wanted to know if I have to dress differently infront of my nonmahram relatives even though I feel more comfortable in the abaya and hijaab I normally wear infront of non-mahrams.
Answer
Walaikum assalam,
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
1. Marriage, like most human relations, needs a good measure of wisdom and diplomacy to make things work. Like politics, diplomatic solutions must be given precedence by those of understanding to declarations of war.
2. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Adam’s recent answers on interaction in general and with in-laws in particular are excellent, and should be read and re-read, because they are full of wisdom and deep understanding of the guidance of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) as explained by his inheritors, the great scholars of the Sunni way. [See attached answers.]
3. Permissible dress would be permitted with in-laws. You do not have to listen to your husband’s demands not to wear the abaya and cannot listen to any demands not to wear proper hijab or not to avoid proper norms of Islamic behavior.
4. However, you should do this with love, tact, and diplomacy, not by war. In marriage, conflict kills love and is far from the mercy and tenderness that is the essence of this most sacred of unions.
And Allah alone gives success.
Walaikum assalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
