Question

However, it does mean that some degree of care should be taken when around one's mother or father-in-law and contact should be proper and restrained. I was wondering what happens if one does touch one's mother-in-law with lust? Would divorce then be required?

Answer

Walaikum assalam,

If the touching with strong desire happens, with all the conditions mentioned [see below], then the offspring and ancestors of the one touched are automatically permanently haram for one, in the Hanafi school.

In cases of genuine error, it may be wise to seek a fatwa from a reliable scholar of another school, such as a Shafi`i.

And Allah alone gives success.

Walaikum assalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
