Question

I married a a few years ago. We both put our money together and had a beautiful wedding, though my husband paid for most of it. Guests gave us money as gifts. Some gave directly to my husband and myself. Some gave directly to my mother. It is my family's tradition that the money is presented to the parents. So, my mom held on to the money. My husband forced me to ask my mother for it, but I was reluctant. He then took me to my mother's home and made me ask her for it. My mother refused to give it to my husband or myself because she knew my husband was the one that wanted it. She told me that she's keeping the money for me. I was fine with that, but my husband got furious and called my mother a thief and a liar. Is the money rightfully his?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The gift money belongs to both you and your husband. He has a right to 50% of it, and can demand it and do whatever he wants with it. The other 50% is yours and he has no right over it.

However, this needs to be resolved with wisdom. When in doubt, seek wise, learned counsel of local scholars.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
