Question
My parents have a very bad opinion of my wife and in laws for no reason. They have strictly forbidden my wife all contacts with her parents. What is the legal position of Islam on this matter?Answer
Assalamu alaykum
It is not permissible to cut one's relationship with any Muslim, unless for valid religious reasons; for instance, to avoid a situation that would compromise ones religious principles, in order to admonish them, etc. However, when kinsfolk are involved (as in this case the mother and father) the impermissibility of severing ties is even more severe. Even the husband cannot prohibit his wife from meeting with them. The Messenger of Allah (upon him be peace) said,
"It is not lawful for a Muslim to severe relationships with his brother for more than three days. Therefore, whoever does severe relationships for more than three days and [thereupon] dies will go to Hell." (Sunan Abi Dawud from Abu Hurayra)
The Messenger (upon him be peace), the manifestation of the most sublime character, allowed some of his wives to host their parents and encouraged polite interaction even though they were unbelievers. Obedience and love for one's parents cannot be compromised, unless they order what is contrary to the commands of the Shariah.
Hence, cutting ties is a sin and encouraging a sin is also a sin.
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam,
Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
