Question

Is it true that in order to establish the relationship of rada'a, the child must have breastfed before he/she began to eat solid foods?

Answer

Al-Salam `alaykum

In order for a relationship of Rada'a to be established the child must have breastfed in infancy. According to Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad this is before the child reaches the ages of two years (equivalent to 24 Islamic months)*. If a child suckles within this period the relationship of Rada'a is established whether the child had begun eating solids or not.

After this period a relationship of Rada'a cannot be established. It is in fact impermissible to continue breastfeeding after such a period has passed.

* This seems to be the preferred view according to `Allama ibn Abidin in Radd al-Muhtar and is also indicated towards by the author of al-Lubab from al-Hidaya.
