Question

A sister's baby is due any time during the next days and she would like to know how far she should keep going with her prayers. I was told by another sister, and passed this information to her, that she should keep praying even after having the contractions, but she wants to know if she should go on even after the rupture of the amniotic sac and stop only when the delivery really starts.

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

In the Hanafi school, she is responsible to pray until most of the child has come out. If she cannot pray standing, then she should do so sitting or even lying down. If she cannot do wudu, then tayammum will do—using a dry stone, for example. [Shurunbulali, Imdad]

What better prelude to childbirth than prayer? It is known to be a means for calming down, too, and lessening the pain.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
