Question
I have reverted to Islam almost 2 years ago, and I was wondering how can a convert go about marriage (finding a mate). I am aware that dating is Haram in Islam, so how can a convert socialize and get to know a Muslim? Keep in mind that most marriages I have witness are organized by born-Muslim families.Answer
Assalamu Alaikum,
Congratulations on making the best choice of your life by reverting to Islam. Insha Allah the following will help you out in finding your marriage partner till death and beyond:
You should try to socialize and make friends with Muslims of your own gender and let them know that you are thinking of getting married. If they are genuine friends, they will not mind in you putting forward your intention of marriage. Once a compatible Muslim is found, then you can take it further from there. Actually a true Muslim is the one who will be making an active effort to help you out in getting married. A good way to get to know Muslims is by joining some Islamic classes at your local Masjid.
Let your local Imam (prayer leader) know of your intentions as well. Many times they have knowledge about prospective marriage partners.
I really don’t know how effective online Muslim matrimonial sites are. Maybe as a last resort, if everything else fails, you can join those sites. Please make sure that you adhere to the rules and regulations of socializing with the opposite gender. Once you find someone who you are interested in, do involve a third pious/reliable person in all your correspondence with that prospective partner.
In Canada, they have a New Muslims Conference. You could contact them about your intentions. Check out the following link for more info: http://www.p4e.ca/nmc/
Make all the effort you can and also supplicate to Allah to choose what is best for you.
As for those who are born as Muslims, it is our duty that we help out reverts to Islam with our time by teaching them Islam, and our finances if they need help and if need be, by offering our sons and daughters in marriage to them. We should invite them to our houses and to our functions and try our utmost to make them feel at home. When the companions of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam migrated from Makkah to Madinah, the people of Madinah (Ansar) offered the Makkan Muslims their wives/daughters and assisted them financially. They would go hungry themselves in trying to feed others.
May Allah keep us steadfast on the religion of Islam.
