Question

I have recently been divorced by my husband. During our married life, he was studying and I supported him even when his studies were complete he refused to take up a job offer. We had not been intimate over the last year of our three-year marriage - though I tried to approach him he neglected me. He wouldn't even converse with me beyond one-word answers, didn't really speak to my mother, refused counseling or to pay for the divorce, and has taken back all gifts given to me. I feel lost, hurt, and used [long question summarized]

Answer

Wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah,

Your ex-husband in this situation is a wrongdoer (dhalim). I pray Allah improves the circumstances for you, grants you patience, and compensates you for your distress in this world, more than you can imagine.

The gifts that were given to you by him or his family are your property. It was totally unlawful for him to take them back. You may resort to necessary means in attempting to regain these gifts from him.

As for the expenses you incurred over the years in supporting you both, since they were not a loan to him, he will not be legally responsible in repaying you this amount.

And Allah alone gives success.
