Question

I recently broke off from my four year engagement due to the fact that my fiancé whilst with me got engaged to someone else. all the while not telling me about his intentions and decisions to no longer marry me. Although part of me wants to talk to him to find out why he did what he did the way that he did it I know that I should not and therefore will not. I am unsure as to what I should do next and how to move past this part of my life.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalam,

May Allah Most High give you ease during this difficult period. It was obviously not right of your former fiancé to have marriage talks with another party while being engaged to you.

You should thank Allah for revealing his questionable character to you before you actually married him.

As for what to do next: cut off all contact with this man, and supplicate to Allah earnestly to help you through these difficult times.

Ideally, it would be better for you to also forgive your former fiancé for the sake of Allah in your heart. Through this you may earn great reward through this time.

Allah Most High said,

“And if you efface and overlook and forgive,

then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”

[Qur’an, 64.14]

Some things also just take time to heal… four years is a long time to be engaged, so realize you won’t get over this overnight. Give yourself some time to get over it. Later on in life you will look back to these times and see that this had to happen for X and Y of the good to occur in your future.

Allah Most High reminds us,

“And whosoever keeps his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for

him,

And will provide for him from (a quarter) whence he has no expectation.

And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Lo! Allah brings His

command to pass. Allah has set a measure for all things.” [Qur’an, 65.2-3]

And Allah knows best.
