Question

Does one’s marriage need to be written down?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is not in itself legally necessary for the marriage contract (nikah) to be written down. However, to ensure that rights are upheld and conditions fulfilled, it is highly advised that it be:

a) written down in an Islamically sound manner; and

b) registered with the authorities of the country one is in.

And Allah alone gives true success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
