Question

I know of a lot of people who would balk at eating in a non Muslims house - I don't but I do have certain queries - sometimes I have doubts when I am invited to a meal by a catholic - they consume pork - and even if they do not cook it on the day I am invited - they may still use the same cooking utensils - could you please clarify the answer given by you in the light of the doubt that I have? Please give the answer in true Islamic tradition and the sunnah of Our BelovedProphet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.

Answer

Walaikum assalam,

The fiqh books (including Ibn Abidin's Hashiya) mention that the reason it is somewhat disliked (in of itself) to eat the food of non-Muslims is the possibility that there could be something impermissible or impure that one is unaware of. However, this doubt is not sufficient to lift the operational assumption of purity of all things, including the food of others.

It is best to clarify one's dietary requirements to one's friends and associates, when this is reasonably possible. You will find that people are generally understanding and accommodating. Most people respect those who are confident about their way of life.

The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), his Companions, and the early Muslims ate the food of non-Muslims, without delving too deeply into matters.

Of course, when one has the reasonable means to ascertain the permissibility of food, such as stuff one buys from stores with the ingredients list printed, one must.

Wassalam,

Faraz.
