Question

How does one handle a spouse who's suffering from clinical depression?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

One should seek professional counsel, because such cases are delicate and require careful attention based on understanding and experience. One should remember the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that, "The best of you are the best to their spouses, and I am the best of your to his spouses." Strive to follow the noble example of the Beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) in being gentle, loving, caring, and patient. When you find your patience tested, bring to mind all the good your spouse has, and all the blessing and good Allah has granted you from your marriage--in this life and in reward in the next.

Read a lot of Qur'an out loud in the house, and play a lot of Qur'an, too--Allah tells us that, "Verily, it is by the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest."

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
