Question

An American Jewish man converted to Christianity, and then married a Christian woman who believes in Christianity but is not really a committed Christian person. The man recently became Muslim. Is his married valid? Or what happens? Someone was things about the woman being considered a kafir apostate or something,, but I didn’t understand them.

Answer

Assalamu alaikum,

After he has become Muslim, his marriage to a Jewish or Christian woman remains valid, and there is no ‘problem’ with it .

Imam al-Kasani said in his Bada’i` al-Sana’i`:

It is permitted for non-Muslims to marry each other, even if their religious systems differ, for [as the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said], ‘Kufris one polity…’ [2 . 272]

Wassalam ,
Faraz Rabbani .
