Music at the Gym

In the e-mail you said that scholars ... discourage going to the gym if there is music, fitna, or men with their awra showing. Now, the gym close to my house is one in which mostly men workout. The fitna is not an issue unless I go during a peak time so that can be avoided inshaAllah by going early morning or at time when others are not there. The issue I'm concerned with is music. They're usually playing some sort of dance or rock music which definitely can have an effect on you....
Walaikum assalam,
It is haram to willfully chose to go to a place where there are sinful activities
taking place. If the sin is on the side of something that one cannot readily
avoid, such as background music at supermarkets and other stores, then it is
one's duty to hate this in one's heart, and do one's reasonable best to not
stay longer than necessary. Going to the gym is not like this, and one should
figure out a way of avoiding this problem. Why not ask them to turn it off?
Or (at least) turn it down until you cannot hear it? Or give them something
halal to play.
Why not just find another gym or another way to exercise?
Whoever leaves something they find pleasure in, seeking the pleasure of Allah,
shall find wonders in their life. "None of you truly believes until his desires
follow that which I came with," said the Prophet of Allah (upon him be blessings
& peace).
Wassalam,
Faraz
