Question

1) Can a father-in-law be a mahram for his daughter-in-law i.e. take her to hajj etc etc?

2) Leading on from 1) Does a daughter-in-law have to maintain a full covering in front of her a father-in-law?

Answer

Walaikum assalam,

If the father-in-law is an upright man, and no fitna is feared from either side, then he may travel with her for Hajj and the like. Caution should be exercised.

If the father-in-law is an upright man, full hijab is not necessary in front of him. However, our scholars tell us that young women should dress in a modest manner, preferring loose unrevealing clothing even at home.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
