Question

I have a friend who was married 10 years ago, but he stopped having sexual relations with his wife after 3 years but remains in the same house, different bedrooms. He was asking is this permissible? It is because his parents don't want to lose face in the community so they force them to stay together but this is causing a great deal of bitterness? what should he do? the fact they haven't had sex for 7 years would that invalidate their marriage?

Answer

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

This does not affect the validity of the marriage.

However, it is the wife’s religious right to have sex with her husband, and few husbands are able to avoid the haram (such as masturbation, unlawful glances, and the like) without a living sexual relationship with their spouses.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
