Question

When I was younger my father always used to say to my mother that " if my parents tell me to divorce you I can" He used to say this because of the time when a Prophet ( I think maybe Prophet Ibrahim) visited his son and left a message with his sons wife to change the front of his door, referring to his sons wife. I can not remember the entire story but I want to know: was my father correct in saying this?

Answer

Wa Alaykum Assalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

The right of parents is that one be good to them, and to deal with them with the utmost respect and deference. As for obedience, it is normally entailed by being good to parents. However, obedience is not absolute. Please go to www.SunniPath.com, and search for obedience to parents for details.

As for your case, it is not a reasonable parental request that their son divorce his wife, except in the most exceptional of circumstances. Even in such cases, one should not do so without consulting a reliable scholar.
