Question

I have a fear of my father dying and have this guilt that I haven't been a good daughter. Is there any prayer that can help me become a better daughter and have my father's blessing?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, with blessings & peace on the Beloved of Allah, and his folk and all lovers of Allah

Walaikum assalam,

May Allah grant your father ease in this life and the next.

The best and most powerful dua is the practical dua, which is the effective asking of Allah that is expressed through our actions. Thus, the best thing you could do is to:

a) be sincere in your repentance for any past shortcomings and errors with regards to your father;

b) seek your fathers forgiveness for your past shortcomings;

c) deal with him with the excellence the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us--be expressive of your love for him, be kind, gentle, and strive to be obedient;

d) make a lot of heart-felt dua for him.

Among the supplications for parents is:

Rabbi gfirli wa li walidayya

Rabbi rhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

"O Lord, forgive me and my parents.

O Lord, have mercy on them as they did when they raised me when small."

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam

Faraz Rabbani.
